What are we doing?

Approaches that utilize the sense of touch are attracting attention as a design technology method to further improve the experience of seeing and hearing that has been used as a means of expression and communication. The HAPTIC DESIGN PROJECT organizes events inviting researchers and creators from the haptic community. We are also involved in a number of joint research and development projects between the tactile design community and companies.

Why do we do it?

The reason FabCafe conducts research and development utilizing haptic technology is because we believe that technological development in the haptic field will become indispensable as communication that utilizes more physicality, as typified by the development of robotics and VR/AR, becomes more widespread. FabCafe also has a demo environment where you can experience various haptic technologies, so please come and try them out.

Implementation of HAPTIC DESIGN-themed projects with various companies

Case: "HAPTICS OF WONDER" by Taica Corporation
We are implementing projects with companies to create sensory value that goes beyond conventional functional value (comfort value through the experience of "touch" and communication). We are experimenting with various approaches involving researchers in the sense of touch and designers and engineers with a deep understanding of the sense of touch.

Development of HAPTIC-themed products

"cocoiku" and "HAPTIC DESIGN PROJECT" developed a new tactile toy "Tactile Ton-Ton-Sumo". The most common way to play ton-to-sumo is to raise a paper-finished sumo wrestler to the ring and vibrate him or her with your fingers. In Tactile Ton-Ton Sumo, however, you fight your opponent by rubbing various materials with a device with a built-in microphone, which vibrates a vibrator placed underneath the ring.

We are holding the HAPTIC DESIGN AWARD, which honors creators who are making things that lead to Haptic as "Haptic Designers".

Organize community-building workshops and meetups

We hold events for corporate engineers, designers, and students studying design, inviting guests who are involved in research and work related to the sense of haptic. With that, we're trying to foster community.
