FAB Meetup
FabCafe Hong Kong is a creative community platform. We want to connect people from various different fields of expertise to collaborate on meaningful projects together. FabCafe provides a space and digital fabrication tools that encourage exploration of innovative and exciting ideas for businesses and individual creators.
We are creating a new series of meetups to spark discussion on important local and global challenges. We also highlight projects by the community that have identified potential solutions and are grasping the opportunity to achieve real impact.
THEME “Sustainable Innovation in Hong Kong”
Hong Kong is ranked as Asia’s second-most sustainable city (9th Globally) according to the 2018 edition of Arcadis’ Sustainable Cities Index, and surpassed only by Singapore. The relatively high ranking is accredited to economic performance and people’s quality of life. However, many environmental factors is holding the city back, including non-renewable energy consumption, vulnerability to natural catastrophes, air pollution and poor waste management.
Fortunately, there are innovators in Hong Kong who employ different strategies to make a change. FabCafe will share two projects that focus on sustainable development of tourism and apparel industry; Ishigaki Island and Anthropocene. We will also hear from two guests who have made it their goal to reduce waste through technological innovation and recycling, unspun and Mil Mill.
unspun
unspun is a venture-backed robotics and apparel company, building custom jeans for each consumer, on demand. Our mission is to reduce global carbon emissions by at least 1% through automated, localized, and intentional manufacturing. We’re a fast-moving company powered by technology, the National Science Foundation, SOSV, the Mills Fabrica and the H&M Foundation.
Mil Mill
Mil Mill is the first pulp mill and education center that recycle beverage cartons in Hong Kong and supported by Recycling Fund. We are able to process 10 tonnes of beverage cartons daily, and convert them into paper pulp. We will try to recycle different kinds of paper as well.
