SPCS Season 4 | Living Dyes: The Exhibition Trials and Results of Cultivating Colour

Living Dyes | The Exhibition showcases the process and results of the research and actual dyed works from a 1.5 month workshop on dyeing textiles with bacteria. How do everyday participants adopt this relatively new and undeveloped dyeing technique? Come witness it for yourself. Detailed explanations in a guided tour by the exhibition organiser are also available.

4 Experiments in Cultivating Colour

In September 2023, 23 participants from a variety of backgrounds gathered in FabCafe Kyoto to learn how to cultivate bacteria through DIY methods. Bringing that newfound knowledge back home with petri dishes swabbed with pigment-producing strains, they embarked on a 6 week challenge to dye textiles with the bacteria. The results of this group experiment are displayed in an exhibition in Kyoto and Tokyo. For the closing night of the exhibition’s run in Tokyo, 4 of the participants will be sharing their experience and thoughts on the process.

SPCS Talks vol.6 Ecological Urban Design With Brian McGrath and Danai Thaitakoo

Against the backdrop of climate change, including an increase in guerrilla downpours and rising urban temperatures, there is a growing movement in the fields of urban design and architecture to seek forms of coexistence with ecosystems. We will invite Brian McGrath and Danai Thaitakoo to this event from New York and Thailand. They have been developing advanced approaches in ecology-based urban design. In addition to introducing their research and case studies, Atsuro Morita, an anthropologist at Osaka University, will join us to exchange views with you on the future of cities.
