Rethinking Existing Evaluation Standards — What is the “Measuring criteria” for Social Implementation?

Many technologies and business ideas that support a circular economy have been proposed to date. However, many of them face challenges such as being difficult to integrate into the intended supply chains or not aligning with existing procurement and evaluation standards. Precisely because these ideas redefine conventional economic cycles, perhaps the goal should not be to conform to existing value frameworks, but rather to present a new “measure of evaluation” of their own.

In this event, we welcome Kazue Oda, developer of the international policy data analysis tool for sustainability RuleWatcher, and Sachiko Hirosue, Osaka Namari-Suzu Seirensho Co., Ltd. President and CEO, who also has a background in bio-art. Together, they will discuss what kinds of evaluation criteria are necessary for technologies and ideas to function within the economic ecosystem, and how these criteria can be designed and proposed to society from new perspectives.

This event aims to provide participants with insights that can help them reconsider their own procurement standards and business strategies.

A Special Program in Conjunction with the crQlr Awards 2024 Winning Works Exhibition

This talk event is being held in conjunction with the traveling exhibition of the international “crQlr (Circular) Awards 2024,” organized by Loftwork and FabCafe. The exhibition will take place at FabCafe Osaka from April 29 to May 31.

The theme of this year’s special award is “Circular Bioeconomy.” The winning projects view nature not merely as a resource, but as a partner, aiming to create value in collaboration with natural systems. Alongside the exhibition, this event offers an opportunity to engage with diverse perspectives on rethinking circularity.

crQlr Awards Exhibition Osaka – Living Loops

This international award invites diverse case studies from Japan and abroad to put into practice “circular design,” which is indispensable for the realization of a circular economy.

Challenging Sensitivity Indicators at FabCafe Osaka

This event will be held at FabCafe Osaka, which opened on April 29, 2025, in Tenma, Osaka, as the 13th FabCafe location developed by Loftwork worldwide. FabCafe Osaka explores creativity and sensibility unconstrained by form, inspired by the modern art philosophy of L’Informe (“the formless”). It also offers a new kind of beverage experience through the process of “aroma distillation,” using a distiller to extract scents and connect visitors with the local climate and natural bounty.

On the day of the event, we will be serving a special drink inspired by the unique environment of Osaka, the “Water Metropolis,” to warmly welcome all attendees.

  • SPCS|A program that embodies the uncontrollability of nature and explores new forms of co-creation

Microbiomes, radiation, viruses, bacteria—the uncontrollable forces of nature are often seen as nuisances or errors in industrial contexts, leading to efforts to eliminate or manipulate them. But what if we could design in ways that embrace these unstable elements? Doing so could radically shift our assumptions about what is “normal.”

SPCS (Species) is a community that engages in prototyping while exploring the mechanisms of ecosystems. It seeks to design without controlling nature and to cultivate creative, coexistent relationships with non-human species. The group works to open up technology and knowledge, aiming to update values and methodologies by blending natural sciences, design, art, engineering, and culture.
