This 3-hour hands-on workshop invites you to transform everyday kitchen scraps into vibrant natural dyes. Using onion skins, avocado pits, coffee grounds, and more, you’ll explore the magic of colour extraction. Experiment with various techniques like immersion dyeing and shibori to dye your own 50x50cm fabric and a pair of socks.

No prior experience necessary!
This workshop is perfect for anyone curious about sustainable art practices and reimagining colour possibilities.

What you take home:
A piece of 50cmx50cm fabric dyed by you
A pair of socks

Workshop Details:
Date: 4th August 2024, Sunday
Time: 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
Venue: Fabcafe KL

Workshop Program:
1. Introduction and Understanding Natural Dyes
Explanation of natural dyes: sources, types, and benefits. Introduction to mordants and their role in dyeing.
Display examples of naturally dyed fabrics.

2. Preparing the Fabric
How to select the right fabrics for dyeing. Demonstration and hands-on preparation.

3. Natural Dye Extraction
– Methods for extracting dyes from natural materials
– Boiling and preparing dye baths
– Safety precautions while handling dyes

4. Dyeing Techniques and Pattern Creation
Introduction to various dyeing techniques such as immersion dyeing and shibori (tie-dye) techniques

5. Final Steps and Care
Care kit and fixing guide will be provided so you can fix the fabric at home.

6. Lunch will be provided!
As your newly dyed fabrics are being dried, lunch is served!

About the Instructors

  • DyeDyeLah

    This dynamic duo (Dian and Syd) was one of the 6 selected artists by the Selangor State Tourism Board to create a captivating art exhibition showcasing their exceptional skills in natural dyeing. Their innovative proposal won them a prestigious grant (Tukang Selangor 2024), propelling their project into reality at the FabCafe Kuala Lumpur for a month. Their combined expertise and creative vision promise to deliver not only stunning, eco-friendly artworks but also to bring immense value to our community.
    This collaboration is set to inspire sustainable practices, enrich the local art scene, and promote cultural heritage, benefiting all who experience their unique contributions.

  • Masitah Babjan aka Syd

    Syd started her career in a technical field more than 20 years ago and since then her corporate exposure has included areas of Learning & Development, Process Facilitation, Coaching and Management Consulting.

    When time permits, she grows and tends to her natural dye garden. She enjoys making wearable art pieces from nature, foraging for botanical materials creating a unique botanical record of that moment in time and place.

    A mostly self-taught natural dyer including the blue indigo dye, her plant-dyeing journey started about 4 years ago and is taking her onto new exciting adventures, bringing out her inner creative bohemian soul. 

    She hopes to revive the art and science of natural botanical dyes to bring more awareness and understanding of what nature can give us with its true and magical colours, building a stronger connection with things we use and wear to create a more sustainable and greener lifestyle.
