Sanguinella: Ink and Fire

A Solo Exhibition by Alexoid Luce

Join us for the opening of Sanguinella: Ink and Fire, a profound solo exhibition by Malaysian artist Alexdrina Chong, also known as Alexoid Luce.

Date: 26th July 2025, Saturday

Time: 3pm – 4pm

Sanguinella: Ink and Fire brings together an emotional body of work by Malaysian artist Alexdrina Chong, also known as Alexoid Luce. Rooted in her ongoing project Sanguinella, this solo exhibition reflects on the quiet but complex struggles of mental health. Through drawings, sculptures, poetry, and storytelling, Alexdrina offers a visual diary of isolation, grief, recovery, and reconnection.

At its core, Sanguinella is an act of creative survival—an outlet for memory, experiences, and self-exploration. The title Ink & Fire reflects the dual nature of the artist’s practice. Ink was where it all began—marks on paper, quiet journaling during the pandemic. Fire speaks to the process of transformation, through the heat that brings her sculptural forms to life, each one fired to hold its final shape.

The exhibition encourages a sense of slowness and presence as each corner reveals fragments of story and moments of tension or release. Here, mental health is not merely illustrated, but embodied. Feelings of emotional stasis or paralysis appear in recurring visual motifs: still figures, tangled limbs, and abstract forms that seem frozen mid-transformation. These offer glimpses into the artist’s mind, while also inviting viewers to reflect on their own.

Sanguinella: Ink & Fire may begin from solitude, but it moves outward and toward the viewer, toward friendship, and toward the broader creative community. Beneath the intimate tone, there’s a quiet call for connection. It tells us that we’re not alone in our stillness, and that meaning can be found even in our most difficult moments. The artist honours solitude as a necessary space for reflection and self-acceptance, while also celebrating the importance of being seen and seeing others with honesty and care. This show also marks the beginning of a creative collaboration between Alexoid Luce and FabCafe KL, where we explore ways to turn personal stories into shared experiences. As a creative hub invested in experimentation and co-creation, we are drawn to the raw honesty of Alexdrina’s work and its refusal to polish grief or wrap healing in certainty. Instead, it welcomes emotional messiness, humour, and a little oddity as ways of making and being. It serves as a reminder that even in our lowest moments, something within us continues to burn: ink, fire, and the courage to begin again.
