We always hear that all living things rely on DNA. But how does DNA make life possible? Join BioClub and OpenPETase to learn about the central dogma of DNA, RNA, and proteins. Through this hands-on workshop, you can see firsthand how the flow of genetic information is possible!

Genes are the blueprint of life. Genes are made of DNA, which makes RNA, which makes proteins. This flow of genetic information is called the “central dogma.” The central dogma is essential to life as we know it, as well as many modern innovations in medicine and biology like vaccines and chemotherapies.

In this workshop, we will explore the “central dogma” using the Biobits DIY biology kit. We will experiment, observe, and experience the mechanism of central dogma through fluorescence. On day 1, we will activate fragments of DNA with other compounds, which will ultimately glow in different colors based on the RNA and proteins made. On day 2, we will meet to see our results and how each experiment led to different outcomes.

Whether you’re a science teacher looking for a new classroom tool, an amateur scientist, or simply interested in how DNA works, this workshop will teach you about the importance of the central dogma to life on Earth. Afterward, take your learning further by supporting OpenPETase or joining BioClub to keep experimenting!

This workshop will be conducted in Japanese with English interpretation and support.

OpenPETase is a non-profit biotech startup that aims to solve the problem of plastic waste through a citizen science approach. In addition to our work developing catalysts and compounds to decompose PET plastic, we organize projects to raise awareness of biotech, including experiments by working people for working people.
