Aside from being nutritionally healthy and delicious, mushrooms are extremely important for our ecosystem, with their role in nature being decomposers. They break down dead and decaying matter, recycling and turning dead matter like leaves and dead animals found in forests back into soil.

Most people associate mushrooms with the fruiting body, which is what we eat. The most important part of any fungi, however, is the vast network of mycelium, which is the vegetative part of a fungus. Mycelium is the white, “stringy” material that you often find in healthy forest soils.
