Biochrome is a naturally occurring substance which imparts colour to the tissues of plants or animals. Plants and animals commonly possess characteristic pigments. They range in plants from those that impart the brilliant hues of many fungi, through those that give rise to the various browns, reds, and greens of species that can synthesize their food from inorganic substances (autotrophs), to the colourful pigments found in the flowers of seed plants.

Botanical bundle dyeing is a natural dyeing method using botanical materials such as leaves, flowers, barks, vegetables & even kitchen waste. Through a process of placing plant materials onto fiber, making little bundles, tying and steaming, it helps to release and transfer nature’s magical colours from plant materials onto the fiber.

At the end of the workshop, you will take home your own unique and creative bundle-dyed silk bandana and an appreciation of other natural dyeing techniques.

All materials will be provided but if you happen to have these botanical dye materials among many others, feel free to bring them along:
– Onion skin – yellow or red
– Turmeric powder or fresh
– Pea flowers & leaves
– Red rose petals

This workshop will be led by Syd of @syiborisyd. Syd hopes to bring awareness of the wonderful and magical colours – biochromes we can derive from plants, giving us the opportunity to reconnect with nature and to revive our senses in a fast-moving world, embracing unpredictability and letting nature do its thing.
