In conjunction with Earth Day 2021, we will be running a workshop called ‘DIY your DYE’ with Ummi Junid. Learn how you can turn kitchen waste such as vegetable scraps to produce a myriad of colours which you can use as a natural dye.

Dyeing with your own hands is not only an opportunity to learn about dyeing techniques, but also to think about the impact of factory dyeing on the earth. The chemical substances discharged into the water by dyeing are still causing the death of aquatic organisms and the pollution of soil and water. Through DIY dyeing, let’s take a step toward thinking about these issues while practicing alternative dyeing methods. Additionally, by using kitchen waste, we also want to raise awareness and start conversations about reducing the amount of household waste that goes to the landfill.

This workshop will be held in FabCafe KL and is designed to be an explorative workshop where we explore and discover how to extract colour pigments from kitchen waste. You will go home with swatches of fabrics dyed in the natural kitchen waste dye.

What you’ll need to bring to the workshop:

  • Kitchen scraps ( closer to the workshop date, we will inform you specifically the kind of kitchen scraps to bring so that we can achieve the desired vibrant colours)
  • Turning waste into a resource
