crQlr Summit TOULOUSE

The crQlr Awards 2022 brought together an international panel of Judges who selected 53 projects that demonstrate powerful interventions for the realization of a circular economy. In the crQlr Summit TOULOUSE, we will look at how these award winning projects push forward  the circular economy, one key for the realization of the “Fab City”, through an open feedback session between winners and Judges. Join us to see how these changemakers approach the core missions of the Fab City Manifesto*, including economic growth and employment, local production, open source philosophy and more.

Introducing the “Fab City” at the FAB14+ in Paris and Toulouse, France
The 2018 Fab City Summit in Paris marked the opening event of FAB14+, the annual international gathering of the FabLab network. The FabLab network includes more than 1000 active members worldwide, all who share the aim to make “almost anything”. Following the Fab City Summit, FabCafe Toulouse and the Fab Lab, Artilect welcomed nearly 600 “Fabbers” for the Fab Conference, where Neil Gershenfeld, professor at MIT and inventor of the FabLab concept, revealed the global initiative of the “Fab City”, which proposes, a “transition towards productive and regenerative economies in regions and cities, driven by people.”

What is a “Fab City”?
Fab City proposes a new urban, economic, social and industrial model that relocalises production to the city and its bioregional context. It is a challenge to transform how we produce and consume (almost) everything. The provocation has grown into a global movement, which is facilitated by the Fab City Foundation, a Network of cities and a Collective of thinkers, makers, and innovators.(1)

The Fab City Challenge: “..The Fab City Global Initiative is enabling this shift away from the industrial paradigm of Product-in Trash-out, by enabling the return of manufacture to cities supported by a Data-in Data-out urban model.” (2)

  • “Photovoltaics is the energy source of the future, but also creates a massive waste stream. Biosphere Solar is a global collective developing a fair and circular solar panel. This way, we aim to set a new design standard for the solar industry, making circularity the norm. We are developing a modular PV module design, which can be disassembled for repair or refurbishment, can be upgraded with new technology, and can be recycled at high value at its end-of-life.”

Solar power plants in rural areas can be a blight on the landscape because they’re often unconnected to the circularity of the land. This is a wonderful project that promotes circularity by giving local people an open-sourced, decentralized and modular system to obtain just enough electricity for their own needs. Because the panels can be maintained and reused by each community, a distinctive local character is preserved.

“Open-Source Prize”, awarded by Kotaro Iwaoka, Hidakuma CEO

  • “In 2018, the largest arrival of sargassum in history occurred in Mexico, leaving the coasts completely covered with marine desire. Nevertheless; the Blue Green Mexico company found a way to take advantage of it, turning the threat into building blocks: The sargablock. The sargablock was born with the intention to provide homes with it to local people of scarce resources, in this process local members of the community are often involved in the elaboration and crowdfunding process to cover the expenses of building this houses.”

…Sargassum is a massive growth on the tropical coast. The harmful algae bloom damages fragile coast and coral ecosystems. The experience of the Blue Green Mexico company might inspire other places that face the same algae problem to invent different products that adopt local needs. I look forward to having an exchange with them to understand their R&D process, the difficulties and prospectives.

  • “The Mikafi roasting platform democratizes the cycle of coffee roasting by connecting farmers, local businesses and nature by technology. This digital service ecosystem contains a fully automated IoT roasting machine, a coffee management platform as well as a physical and digital coffee experience for consumers.”

Mikafi’s roasting platform could turn out to be revolutionary if it minimizes the impact on our planet of the global coffee trade, including the environmental impact of transportation.

“New Fair Trade Coffee Prize”, awarded by Noriko Ishizaka, President of Ishizaka Inc.

About the crQlr Awards

Launched in 2021 by FabCafe Global and Loftwork as Japan’s first award in the field of circular design, the crQlr Awards aim at supporting the future-designers who are working toward the implementation of circular economy systems. Our goal is to nurture a community where players can connect across industries and countries and share knowledge and technologies in order to uncover potential and create new value.

How can we develop impactful circular systems in a wildly diverse world? FabCafe branches across different countries have proven that long lasting change often starts small and responds to the specific needs of local communities. Thus, in its second edition, the crQlr Awards have introduced the FabCafe Global Special Prize, which will highlight bottom-up activities aimed at solving community issues.
