About

“Down by the Water” is a short film series curated by Nina Dillenz (AT) and Duan Wenyu (CN), that was produced in cooperation with the Austrian Consulate Shanghai and the Women’s Film Festival branch of the Baturu Culture Festival on the occasion of 50 years of diplomatic relations between China and Austria in 2021. Six female filmmakers from China and Austria each contributed one short film. These six pieces were then edited together into one viewing experience. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the program only premiered in April 2023, at the Goethe Institute in Shanghai.

During this event you will have the chance to meet one of the filmmakers, Ekaterina Kormilitsyna, who will be leading a series of workshops at FabCafe that engage with ecology & science fiction.

Please note that the main speaking language of this event will be English. The film will feature Japanese subtitles.

Short film series concept: Water as a medium

Bodies of water, be it rivers or the sea, play an immense role in connecting cultures. They carry not only goods to trade from far-flung places, but also people: salesmen, explorers, adventurers. And with the people, stories travel down streams and across oceans. Water is also an element traditionally associated with the female as is shown in countless myths from across the globe in the shape of deities, mermaids, sirens and more generally as it symbolizes the creation of life. From the sea foam born Aphrodite to the river goddesses of Egyptian and Hindu mythology, to the lady of the lake from the Arthurian Legend and the Daoist ideas of Yin and Yang, water permeates human imagination as a female force.
