In the hustle and bustle of city life, it can be easy to forget that life is all around us. Tiny organisms from insects to amoebae live out their lives unnoticed our air, soil, and water. Any area where a community of small organisms thrives is called a biotope.
Spiral Club, an environmentally focused open community based in Tokyo, is hosting their sixth biotope observation day. By observing a biotope through microscopes, Spiral Club members try to restore their sense of connection with the rich web of life, even in an urban setting. The project was conceived in during Shibuya Slow Stream, a regular community event that aims to gather residents around the Shibuya River for arts, music, and community.
Biotope observation is usually conducted outdoors on the Shibuya River, where the project began. However, due to the winter temperatures, this iteration of the program will take place indoors at BioClub Tokyo. Attendees will observe samples from the river, trying to identify and appreciate the diverse life within. The session will be led by BioClub member and professional illustrator Dominique, whose passion for microscopy guides her independent projects at BioClub.
Attendance is free but requires registration by messaging the Spiral Club Instagram account. Space is limited, so reserve your place today!
