About One-bite Feminism

The One-bite Feminism event series at FabCafe Tokyo reflects on gender inequality in Japan and is organized by the Dutch/Japanese designer, filmmaker and FabCafe intern, Aya Bergkamp. Aya interviewed women with different backgrounds on their experiences and perspectives on gender inequality in Japan and how they envision the future. The key question is: How do women of different generations in Japan navigate society in order to tackle gender inequality and create the futures they want?

These are complex challenges that can become demotivating when realizing all the different facets and efforts that are needed for systemic change in a society. Therefore, it is important to keep a positive mindset and realize that if everyone does a small thing every day, together they can make a large impact. This is the metaphor of ‘taking one-bite at a time’ that is used in One-bite Feminism. With one-bite of feminism, you can become part of social change towards greater gender equality.

About digital embroidery in “One-bite Feminism”

The “One-bite Feminism” short film connects current technology of digital embroidery to the history of handmade embroidery, which has been a channel for women to express their opinions for more than 300 years. Aya uses digital embroidery as a tool for expressing her reflections on the interviews she conducted with diverse women in Japan.

Embroidery has been the means of educating women into the feminine … but it has also provided a weapon of resistance to the constraints of femininity

Did you know that up to 70% of labour in coffee production is provided by women, depending on the region? However, only 20-30% of coffee farms are female-operated [1] and the coffee-roasting sector is male-dominated. With regards to the gender gap in the coffee-roasting rector, part of it stems from prejudicial hiring practices. Another factor is that there are few female role models in the industry [2].

That is why FabCafe Tokyo presents “Limited Edition Drip Coffee X One-bite Feminism”. During the exhibition period January 14th until January 22nd, FabCafe serves four unique coffee roasteries. These coffee roasteries all work on women empowerment in their own way; they are women owned or support growth of women in the coffee sector.

LILCRIBCOFFEE is a coffee shop without a store. It is founded by Nobe Tamaki, who is also a barista at FabCafe Tokyo. The mission of LILCRIBCOFFEE is to “give shape to human connections through coffee.” They are based in Tokyo, and value creating human connections in an exciting space. Currently, LILCRIBCOFFEE holds “Coffee x Music” events from time to time.

MANLY COFFEE is based in Fukuoka. The owner, Noriko Sunaga, is known by coffee lovers as the “mother of the aeropress” and is the leading figure in the spread of the aeropress in Japan.
