Exhibition: “The Power of Openness – Opening Boundaries and Creating Relationships Together”

  • #Accepting reservations
  • #Entrance Free

FabCafe has been working to open up technologies and opportunities related to making and creative expression. With a renewed focus on the transformative power that “openness” has to shift what we consider normal, we are holding the exhibition “The Power of Openness.” It will showcase works and projects that embody the challenge of “opening up” in diverse forms.

Openness — a state of being open. Rather than aiming for a finished, closed form, it means moving our hands together with others and going beyond what is predictable. This has been a core approach at FabCafe as we continue making with local creators and artists across our 13 locations worldwide.

In this exhibition, “The Power of Openness,” we present works and projects that embody this state of openness in a variety of ways.

Crossing boundaries of expertise.
Embracing uncertainty and ambiguity.
Visualizing relationships that are normally unseen.
Finding meaning between the living and non-living.
And creating new alternatives.

There are infinite ways to practice openness. The methods, technologies, and motivations all differ.
Yet in every case, openness brings new encounters, new perspectives, and a power to transform what we take for granted.

From projects that open space development to industries outside the space sector, to artworks that explore the physical senses of the participant, to open collaborations that create entirely new food textures through computational design, we will introduce domestic and international projects that unlock the possibilities of people and society through openness.

The asteroid Apophis, approximately 340 meters in diameter, will make its closest approach to Earth on April 13, 2029. While the probability of collision with Earth is considered extremely low, the distance from the Earth’s surface at closest approach will be about 32,000 km—roughly one-tenth the distance to the Moon. Seizing this rare observational opportunity, Project Apophis aims to bring together companies, technology, capital, new talent, and imagination to create new innovations in the space sector.

Specifically, the project will carry out an asteroid exploration mission led by the Planetary Exploration Research Center (PERC) at Chiba Institute of Technology, and establish a collaboration platform to promote co-creation between space and non-space industries.

Additionally, the project collaborates with Safecast, which operates a global open-data network for radiation monitoring. By leveraging open data, it seeks to advance deep-space exploration through citizen science.

A system called the “Texture Generator” that creates textures from words. Using OpenAI, it can generate textures even from abstract and free expressions such as “spring, blooming in the night sky.” The system converts prompts into parameters by evaluating the similarity between descriptive words and texture elements like “jiggly” or “crispy,” then calculates the internal structure and how it breaks down in the mouth, producing a detailed 3D model. This model is output using a 3D food printer, designing entirely new textures and flavors.

With global aging and increasing efficiency, the skilled techniques of traditional crafts are at risk of disappearing without being recorded or passed down. In Japan as well, many orally transmitted skills and knowledge—the “mastery of craft”—are currently being lost. This project digitizes the skills of traditional craftsmen and archives them on a data platform accessible worldwide, aiming to promote the preservation and transmission of local cultures.

A new work from the original series “HanaTec”, featuring a headphone as the central element. Inspired by the Sogetsu technique of “disassemble and rearrange,” parts that are normally overlooked—such as ear pads and bands—are reconstructed as the main materials. Placed by the window at FabCafe, the piece subtly introduces both the aesthetic beauty and slight dissonance of the product.

“I can’t fix it myself.” “It’s faster just to buy a new one.”
For various reasons, we throw away broken things and replace them with new ones. But what actually lies beneath our reluctance or inability to repair? And what actions can we take to reclaim the practice of mending?
Through an exhibition and workshops that re-examine these questions from multiple perspectives, we invite you to rethink the concept of “repair” and make it a personal part of your life once again.

Using the theme of “Openness,” innovative projects from around the world are showcased on a large display. See how they creatively tackle global environmental and social challenges.
