FabCafe Bangkok is a co-organizer of this year’s Media Architecture Biennale, bringing to the organizers’ table over a decade of experience curating and producing diverse media architecture projects. The Media Architecture Biennale (MAB) is a biannual conference that explores the intersection of architecture and media, focusing on the relationship between built environment and digital technologies. MAB 2025 will take place November 18-23 in Bangkok, Thailand, making it the first iteration of MAB to take place in Southeast Asia. Previous MABs have been held in Toronto (2023), Amsterdam/Utrecht (2020), Beijing (2018), Sydney (2016), Aarhus (2014, 2012), Vienna (2010), Berlin (2008), and London (2007), attracting approximately 400 participants annually.

The conference brings together professionals from diverse backgrounds to examine media architecture in various forms and across disciplines, from interactive urban screens to immersive digital environments. Organised by the Amsterdam University of Applied Science and the Urban Interfaces Group at Utrecht University in collaboration with the International Media Architecture Institute, the MAB brings together leading scholars, designers and practitioners to share knowledge and shape the future of media architecture.

In addition to FabCafe Bangkok being a co-organizer, one of its co-founders, Kalaya Kovidvisith, is serving on the executive board of MAB 2025. Known for its advanced extended reality (XR)  and other creative technologies, FabCafe Bangkok is anticipated to host a special event during the biennale, inviting participants to experience its dynamic space and unique competencies in the realm of media arts and design. This involvement underscores FabCafe Bangkok’s commitment to fostering innovation and cross-disciplinary collaboration in the realms of media architecture and digital fabrication.

The theme of the 2025 biennale is “Urban Dialogue: Transformative Living Phenomena,” focusing on how media architecture can facilitate communication and interaction within urban spaces to promote a deeper connection between people, places, and technology. Presentations and exhibited works will explore this theme on three levels: community, city, and global, reflecting the role of media architecture in shaping vibrant cultures, urban media paradigms, and urban futures as a whole.

MAB 2025 currently has an open call for submissions for presentation during the conference portion of the event. Papers are being accepted through September 15th, and may come from students, academics, or industry professionals. Submissions should address media architecture as an element of urban dialogue. Papers selected for the conference will have the opportunity to reach a global audience of media architecture experts, innovators, and thought leaders, and contribute to important discussions shaping the future of urban spaces. The proceedings will be published in the ACM Digital Library, and presentations will happen via online or on-site sessions. More information about the open call can be found on the MAB 2025 official website.
