Get ready for a fun-packed evening at FabCafe Tokyo as we roll out an exciting storyboard workshop with the one and only animation maestro, Stu Livingston!

With an impressive portfolio that includes contributions to globally recognized animation shows such as Steven Universe (Cartoon Network), Futurama (Rough Draft Studios), The Loud House (Nickelodeon), or The Owl House (Disney), Stu will take us on a journey through the art of storyboarding, providing valuable perspectives from his extensive career in the animation industry.

Typically arranged chronologically, storyboards serve as a visual guide for filmmakers, animators, and directors to pre-visualize and plan the structure of a film, animation, or any visual narrative. Each frame in a storyboard depicts a specific moment or shot, and together they convey the flow and pacing of the story. In a word, they are the backbone of animation!

Storyboarding is a vibrant and dynamic process that requires artists to skillfully navigate the realms of image, movement, story, pacing, and mood. Artists must think critically about how to convey emotions, actions, and narrative beats through static images, fostering a continuous exercise in creative problem-solving. Great storyboard professionals maintain precision and detail within tight time constraints, adapting to script or creative changes. They also excel at striking a balance between individual creativity and consistency with the project’s overall vision.

All of this makes storyboarding a challenging discipline, but also one of the most encompassing and gratifying in the creative realm!

For Stu Livingston, Japan has always offered a nourishing perspective on life-as-usual. With its beauty, culture, and cuisine, every visit leaves a lasting impact and a new sense of direction for the trip home.

In “A Bold Impression,” the artist explores new techniques of storytelling using ink on paper. These drawings aim to capture the spontaneity of life in Tokyo—embracing both its past and present, and the endless connections in between.
