FUJI TEXTILE WEEK 2025, the art festival celebrating textile, organized by the FUJI TEXTILE WEEK Executive Committee, will take place in Fujiyoshida City, Yamanashi Prefecture, from November 22 (Sat) to December 14 (Sun), 2025.

This year’s edition, centered on the theme “What Flows Beneath the Weave,” invites artists and creators from Japan, Spain, the Czech Republic, Indonesia, and beyond to explore the invisible forces, rhythms, and memories that run beneath the visible patterns of textiles.

Continuing from the 2023 edition, Fumio Nanjo will once again serve as the Art Director, with Kensho Tambara as the Curator. The exhibition seeks to reveal the cultural and historical layers that pulse under the weave, using textile as a medium to uncover what is unseen and embedded within everyday life.

Since its founding in 2021, FUJI TEXTILE WEEK has positioned itself as an art festival rooted in local industry, previously featuring artists such as Shinji Ohmaki, Yoichi Ochiai, and Asami Kiyokawa.
Though modest in scale, the festival has been widely acclaimed for its curatorial perspective and deep engagement with the region. This year continues that spirit, bringing together a dynamic mix of domestic and international artists whose practices span art, design, and craft, and uncovering new possibilities in Fujiyoshida, long known as “The Weaving City.”

Among this year’s participants, A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE draws particular attention for its forward-looking approach to textiles. Led by designer Yoshiyuki Miyamae, the brand’s engineering and design team carries forward the concept of A-POC (A Piece of Cloth) initiated by Issey Miyake, pursuing new forms of clothing creation through collaboration across digital technology, art, and craft. Their new work for FUJI TEXTILE WEEK 2025 responds directly to the theme, exploring how invisible rhythms can move between materials, showcasing the potential of textiles as a medium for the future.

Artist Fuka Nagata, active in both video and sound media, will present a new piece inspired by an original poem written for the exhibition by poet Natsumi Aoyagi. Their collaboration weaves sound and text into a poetic spatial experience, expanding the imagination through memory, rhythm, and flow. Alongside them, other participating artists will present works that reinterpret local craft traditions, urban memories, and natural environments, together composing the rich tapestry of this year’s exhibition.

As a new initiative, FUJI TEXTILE WEEK 2025 has launched a residency that invites artists to engage with Fujiyoshida through locally rooted activities.

Two artist-in-residence programs based in the city, SARUYA Artist Residency and KURA HOUSE AIR, have long welcomed artists and creators from Japan and abroad, supporting their creative practices within the local community.

Curated jointly by these two residencies, the newly established Residency Program invites both returning artists and new participants from overseas whose work resonates with this year’s theme.

The line-up includes artists from Spain, the Czech Republic, Indonesia, and beyond, bringing together a diversity of perspectives and experiences shaped by Fujiyoshida’s textile culture.
