Eleventh FabCafe opens in Kuala Lumpur!
Since Loftwork created the first FabCafe in Shibuya in 2012, we have expanded the FabCafe Global network to eight countries including city branches Taipei, Hong Kong, Barcelona, and Monterey. Now, FabCafe Kuala Lumpur, a new branch of the FabCafe Global Network, has opened.
The predecessor of FabCafe KL, the maker space known as FabSpace KL, was originally produced at the direction of FabCafe Tokyo in 2016 and was located inside the ISETAN The Japan Store Kuala Lumpur department store. After four years in The Japan Store, FabCafe KL Co-founders Ignatius Andi Permadi and Gwyneth Jong reaffirmed their commitment to building creative communities and further developing their activities in a more open and accessible space as FabCafe KL.
The charm of Malaysia, where diverse cultures come together in FabCafe KL
FabCafe KL is located in an area called Oasis Ara Damansara, which is home to several diverse creative communities in Kuala Lumpur.
Oasis Ara Damansara is a 64,000-square-meter hub of large and medium sized business offices, stylish commercial shops, modern studio apartments, and a variety of lively entertainment and dining options. The oasis-like city has been developed as a multi-purpose walkable community with a blend of leisure activities. The Oasis Ara Damansara complex includes woodworking and traditional Malaysian craft batik studios. Other studios, art galleries, and event spaces are all located in an organic and creative community setting. Surrounding Oasis Ara Damansara, within a 15-kilometer radius of the city, are a number of prominent Universities with programs in art, design and architecture.
By establishing FabCafe in an area which supports a variety of lifestyle, business and creativity functions, FabCafe KL will build collaborative communities where various fields feel empowered to create new things in a fun and accessible atmosphere. By connecting to the FabCafe Global platform with 11 locations worldwide, FabCafe KL aims to go beyond the functions of a typical makerspace by connecting with and building upon FabCafe Open Labs around the world. In Tokyo as well, we look forward to providing new value to the projects that are emerging from FabCafe KL.
FabFuture – A new project to solve the challenges of 2050
At FabCafe KL, an exciting and futuristic project is already underway: by 2050, the world’s population is expected to reach 10 billion people and thus we are exploring solutions for a self-reliant future. FabFuture is a project that aims to design and innovate. For example, in the area of material science, FabCafe KL is currently experimenting with sustainable materials such as coconut shells and tea leaves. In particular, they are showing different ways that these biomaterials can be used as an alternative to plastic. Other topics being covered in the FabFuture project includes new urban farming techniques, upcoming waste management technology and innovation in energy and water supply systems.
At FabCafe KL, we aim to share knowledge and ideas with as many people as possible through engaging events, inspiring workshops while co-creating with experts and creators to offer new solutions to current and future challenges.
