Theme: Coffee Culture and Ethical Design

This event is an exchange and presentation event that brings together players involved in sustainable agriculture and food industry, transcending industries and professions, with coffee as the starting point. Presenters will include people working on different approaches to the theme, such as services that make communication between producers and consumers a more ethical and enriching experience, and designs that rethink disposal and manufacturing to promote a recycling-oriented society and beyond. The purpose of this event is to share interests and awareness of issues, and to create opportunities for collaboration that transcends the boundaries of industries and fields of expertise. (Co-sponsored by Mikafi, swissnex, FabCafe Kyoto)

What is Fab Meetup Kyoto?

Fab Meetup Kyoto” is a monthly meetup event held at FabCafe Kyoto with the theme of “creation”. Over the past years, more than 300 creators, craftsmen, researchers, entrepreneurs, and various other people have given presentations in a variety of genres. The event has formed a unique community as a place where chemical reactions among creative people, things, and products are generated.

There is only one rule: 10-minute presentations. You can use slides, show your work, or express yourself physically, and you are welcome to present not only your results but also your ideas and find friends.

Also, if you have an idea for something you want to make (it does not necessarily have to be a “thing” as an object), feel free to share it with people you meet at the event. You may find some hints while having fun talking with other participants.

    Manager, Umi no Mukou Coffee(海ノ向こうコーヒー)

He is in charge of production areas for “Umi no Mukou Coffee(海ノ向こうコーヒー)”, an overseas business of Saka no Tochu Co. He talk with producers in Asian countries to purchase high quality coffee, and also work to connect Japanese roasters and producers to help solve problems in the coffee producing regions.

    [About Umi no Mukou Coffee(海ノ向こうコーヒー)]
Each coffee-producing region has its own people’s lives and culture, and each region has its own story to tell. At the same time, there are environmental issues such as deforestation, the outflow of young people to urban areas, and price competition due to the influx of the money economy. That is why we do not see ourselves as a producer-buyer relationship, but rather as a co-producer, working together with local farmers to improve coffee quality and help solve problems such as reducing deforestation and creating jobs in the mountainous areas. With this in mind, we regularly visit coffee-producing regions to review cultivation methods and refining processes to meet local needs, and provide financial and sales channel support.
